A toll-free number is a special telephone number that can be called at no cost to the caller, as the call recipient pays for the call cost. Toll-free numbers are also called 800 numbers as they have the area code as 800. But now, they start with 888, 877, 800, 866, etc.

800 number

Operandi: When someone calls a toll-free number, the call is routed to a local exchange company which searches the SMS800 database to determine the number to route the calls. It applies the routing and billing features and directs the call to the local telephone number where it is programmed to ring. This entire process takes less than a millisecond and is not perceivable by the caller.

Toll-free numbers were first developed by AT&T as a means of convenient business operations. Businesses paid for the tolls on behalf of their customers who called them up. With time, toll-free numbers gained immense popularity and businesses started to realize that customers loved to patronize companies with toll-free numbers.

When the initial 800 numbers seemed to have exhausted, 888 numbers were created. When these numbers got dwindled, it led to generation of 877 and 866 numbers. 833, 822, 844, 855 numbers have been kept in reserve.
